Software Technology

The software market appears poised for a stirring rebound. Worldwide spending on packaged software alone is projected at more than $200 billion, with more than half to be spent in North America. Add to that the costs associated with software consulting and support and services, and the total worldwide spend grows to nearly $600 billion.

Beyond the numbers, however, this resurgence can be traced to the paradigm shift from that of the packaged, shrink-wrapped CD software to one of an open computing environment. Concepts like Service Oriented Architectures, Information Lifecycle Management, Open Source Computing and emerging platforms such as Linux have redefined the model of how software is bought and sold.

With this comes a demand for security, compliance, storage and bandwidth technologies supporting momentum for a software market populated not only by perennial leaders (IBM, Microsoft, Sun, Cisco, etc.), but also by a healthy new wave of startups and niche technology players.

Which companies will emerge at the forefront of the rebound remains to be seen. Contenders need to speak not only to their products' differentiators, but also communicate their role in transforming the very idea of software computing.
